FAQs

How does whiplash happen?

Whiplash is most commonly received from riding in a car that is truck from behind and collide with another vehicle.  When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine can be over-stretched or torn.  In a rear end collision for example, the victim's car is first pushed or accelerated forward and then, because their foot is on the brake, the other car hits the vehicle in front, their car is rapidly slowed down or decelerated.  As the vehicle accelerates forward, it pushes the body forward too, but the head remains behind momentarily, rocking up and back, until some of the muscles and ligaments are stretched or torn.

How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic works because you are a self-healing, self-regulating organism controlled by your nervous system.  Millions of instructions flow from your brain, down the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue.  Signals sent back to the brain confirm if your body is working correctly.  Improper motion or position of the moving bones of the spine, called a subluxation, can interfere with this vital exchange by irritating nerves and compromising the function of affected organs and tissues.  Specific spinal adjustments can help improve mind/body communications.  Health often returns with improved nervous system control of the body.

Is chiropractic safe?

Yes.  A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are "remarkably safe."  By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record.  A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited.  Compare the statistics.  Adjustments are about 100 times safer than taking over the counter pain reliever.

What can I expect on my first visit?

Dr. Tracy will first listen to your health complaints that you are most concerned about.  He will conduct a spinal examination and analysis to detect subluxation and nerve interference that may be affected your spine.  The exam is painless and performed fully clothed.  A health questionnaire helps the doctor to evaluate where you are in the healing process.

What is a subluxation and how is it corrected?

Subluxation refers to a spinal or peripheral joint that is relatively immobile or out of place.  Subluxations cause imbalance in the spine, affecting the way our body and brain communicate with one another, irritating nerve vessels and possibly causing pain and dysfunction in the muscles and organs.  Accidents, injuries and inherited spinal weaknesses are common causes of subluxations.  Others include sleeping habits, poor posture, obesity, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, and too little rest.  Chiropractors treat subluxations with a healing technique called spinal adjustment, a procedure that involves specific, short, quick thrusts to return vertebrae to their proper position.  They may use other tools or techniques and will explain these to you at the time.

What is an adjustment?

The chiropractic adjustment involves the utilization of specific, short-lever, high velocity controlled forceful thrusts by hand or instrument that are directed at subluxations.  The goal of this corrective procedure is to return joints to their proper position, remove subluxations, and restore health to the nervous system.

Does adjustment hurt?

Most chiropractic adjustments are painless.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a syndrome characterized by pain radiating from the back into the buttocks and into the lower extremities along its posterior or lateral aspect and most commonly caused by a prolapse of the intervertebral disk.  Sciatica is usually caused by irritation of a nerve root of the sciatic nerve, often from compression of a disk or degenerative disease.  The sciatic nerves are long, large nerves that run from the lower part of the spine, in what are called nerve "roots."  The nerves run down through each of the buttocks and all the way down the backs of the legs.  If something compresses or pinches the nerve roots, it can cause lower back pain as well as pain in the buttocks or legs.  Sciatica is also used to refer to pain anywhere along the course of the sciatic nerve.

How old should a person be before receiving chiropractic care?

People of all ages are candidates for chiropractic care.  Even babies can have subluxations due to the rigor of birth.  In general, it is best to treat children's subluxations as they interfere with nerves that control developing muscles and organs.  With an early check-up, these problems can be detected and easily corrected.

Should I go to the chiropractor if I feel fine?

Your chiropractor can recognize and detect problem areas in your spine before they develop into serious problems.  Adjustments help to maintain a healthy spine and maintenance care visits may include advice on posture, nutrition and exercise to effectively prevent pain.  Regular check-ups will assure that small stresses do not become major misalignments.

How will the adjustment help me?

Chiropractic adjustments help eliminate interference that prevents your body from healing itself.  misalignments interfere with your nervous system, which affects organs and muscles throughout your body.

Does an adjustment have to make a noise to be effective?

No.  Patients often hear a "pop" but it is not related to the treatment's effectiveness.  Instead, the explanation lies in a lubricant that is found in every joint.  That fluid contains dissolved gases.  Separating joints creates pressure which causes the gases to rapidly escape, creating a "pop."

How does chiropractic care help pregnant women?

Pregnancy places additional weight and stress on women's bodies.  Chiropractic treatment can help relieve related low back, leg, and shoulder blade pain.  It may also reduce incidences of headache and nausea.

Is it true that chiropractors do not prescribe medicine or perform surgery?

Yes. Chiropractors do not prescribe medication or perform invasive procedures.  They believe the body has the ability to heal itself and therefore focus on providing it with the right elements for self-restoration.
